Couples Photo Shoot! What to Wear? Take Note.

So I while back I posted about what to wear for a photography session, and I want to re-post the information for my dear clients. The tips really can apply to individuals, couples, or family sessions.

I advocated that taking your sweetheart out for a photography session is something that every couple should try at least once. And you know what, I still believe that. So here’s a reminder. Do it. The shoot captures the two of you in your world. Your loves, likes, and yes it can be intimate. Can I promise one thing?  Each time you look back on that photo, it will give you a sweet feeling that just resonates through your  body, every.single.time.

The shoot can be intimate, playful and funny.

And as I’ve said before, taking photos is nerve-wrecking for most people. You don’t want to look bad, you need to lose that bump on your nose overnight, or simply that you’re suppose to be naturally PDAing it on the shoot, while someone is snapping photos in your face! How is that suppose to work with all that going through your head?

First, breathe. Second, it will all happen because it’s you, your sweetheart and the coolest photographer in the world is documenting your story (who else could I be speaking of?!)But, what other factor do you need to look amazing?  Clothes.  Your clothes are going to make the hugest difference. Choice of clothes are also determined by the location of your shoot. But, here are some general tips, that work for any shoot.

#1
Don’t match. Okay, if you must, contrast it up with a colored cardigan or jewelry. Or both wear fall colors or both wear different shades of blue. I mean…how are we supposed to make a picture look cool when you’re both wearing khaki pants and blending in?! So by mixing up colors and textures you’re adding depth. Jewel-tone colors are loved, rich blues, purples, pinks or even reds. Try to stray away from browns, whites, or tans as it tends to wash out the skin.
#2
Look at advertisements for inspiration.  Look at ads that are similar to your shoot. Companies hire professionals to create an outfit that is perfect to sell their product–so copy.

Whatever anyone is wearing, be as comfortable in the outfit as possible!  If you feel hot in it, you’re going to look hot in it!  If you feel fat in those pants, why are you even considering it?. The best pictures are when everyone is having fun, not feeling uncomfortable.

Side Wear Notes to Consider:
  • Layers- It’s adding depth and something for the eye to be attracted to.  So bring your accessories!  Hats, scarves, tank top over a t-shirt, fun shoes, jewelry–bring it all out!
  • Bring a few options for clothes – What if the shoot is diverted to a different location that better suits another outfit, or maybe what you thought you’d be comfortable in……..wasn’t so much. The goal is to be comfortable and to feel great about yourself!
  • Heels- Great to flash out those new babies……..meaning those new Jimmy Choos you’ve had your eye on for months. But, if you’re shooting out in the Prairie where walking in dirt, rocks, etc is required, don’t hesitate to bring slippers to walk comfortably in between shoots.
  • Be comfortable! (but not sweatpants comfortable……….

There are so many “what to wear” outfits that can be found on Pinterest or Polyvore. Use them to inspire or help give you an idea of what you’re looking for. Typically, you’ll find me sending over inspiration boards to help our happy couple.

Below are examples I found while googling.

Spring + Summer

Fall + Winter

Again, this applies to any shoot. I love the idea of family portraits because really, your kids grow up so fast! Why not freeze that moment in time with a photo? The experience really takes you away from the craziness of the world, and give you that bonding time with your kids, your spouse. It’s not just for the photos, but it’s for the experience.
